The ketogenic diet has been around since the 1920s and has been evolving ever since. It has had a popularity resurgence in recent years through diets such as the Bulletproof Diet and by its use by fat-powered professional athletes and the Navy SEALS to prevent deep-dive oxygen toxicity. We’ve taken a very close look at the story behind the ketogenic diet in our three part series, but have not looked at the day-to-day specifics of eating a ketogenic diet. And that’s where The KetoDiet Cookbook comes in.
Not only does it contain staples of a diet that we would consider totally non-primal, it has a host of desserts, snacks and treats that read like a menu in an American diner. Cinnamon rolls, pizza, and bacon waffles on a ketogenic diet?! Who’da thunk it?
Going low-carb, high fat, and moderate protein can seem like a daunting prospect, especially if you’re not creatively minded in the kitchen. Blogger, app-creator, and author, Martina Slajerova has made things infinitely easier for those looking to change from sugar-addicts to fat-burning beasts. After being diagnosed with Hashimoto’s hypothyroidism, Martina went low-carb and started with her blog (filled with countless recipes), then created an app, and now has published a cookbook.
At first glance the book looks like a normal cookbook: bread, pizza, sushi – all manner of things that would typically contain carbs. But wait! It’s all CARB-FREE (and grain-free, sugar-free, and starch-free)! Not only does it contain staples of a diet that we would consider totally non-primal, it has a host of desserts, snacks and treats that read like a menu in an American diner. Cinnamon rolls, pizza, and bacon waffles on a ketogenic diet?! Who’da thunk it?
This book takes the carbs out of all the delicious foods and replaces them in a well-thought out, uncompromising way. That is, not compromising on nutrition, flavour, ease, and cost.
The layout is excellent. There is a brief description with each recipe, an ingredients list, and dietary tips and tricks depending on certain ingredients, like the nuances of cooking with psyllium husk. There are stunning photos interspersed that catch the eye (and the stomach!) with a few beautifully spread over whole pages.
The sections are well thought out: What is the Ketogenic Diet?, Homemade Basics, Breakfast, Savoury Snacks, Healthy Lunch Ideas, Satisfying Soups & Salads, Main Meals, Sides, and Drinks & Desserts. Martina has EVERYTHING covered.
The ingredients used don’t deviate from the norm, and if you’re used to eating Paleo or low-carb already, then you’re likely to have MCT oil, stevia, and coconut cream in the cupboard already.
So what about the science? That’s there too. She covers aspects that include whether we need carbs, formulation of the ketogenic diet, a review of fats, types of low-carb sweeteners, calories, and alcohol. However, it doesn’t stop there. You see, you can have a ketogenic diet, and you can have a well-formulated ketogenic diet. If it’s not well-formulated, then it can still be pretty unhealthy. Martina manages to pull together all the elements of delicious food, the ketogenic diet, and sensible nutritional ideas. If you prefer to keep your dairy intake low then she caters for that too, giving the option to use heavy cream or coconut cream.
The only thing I would have liked is a photograph with every recipe – I tend to lean more towards recipes with pictures, as the visual element of food is very engaging. It was also difficult to choose what to cook – there’s so much choice and it all looks delicious! First world problems, eh?
With The Ketodiet Cookbook, Martina has bought a smile to my face on multiple occasions: having recipes for delicious bread, pizza, ice cream (and all the other goodies that you love but must avoid on the low carb diet) is an absolute treat, and a necessity for your sanity! This book proves that healthy doesn’t need to be boring or restrictive.
