Sometimes it is a coincident and yet, I don’t believe in them – I read an article on Primal Eye by Amy Saunders about getting back to basics with your skin care and not long after I came across Sweet Cecily’s Soothing Skin Cream. I think the universe was trying to hint to me that I needed to go a little more natural with my beauty products. Every so often I do love having an afternoon making my own creams and toothpastes with cocoa butter and coconut oil but sometimes it’s nice to let the expert do it and have something special.

Sweet Cecily’s Soothing Skin Cream is made from cocoa butter, almond oil, hemp oil, propolis, and borage oil. In all honesty, I wouldn’t have the time or know how to go out to get these ingredients and achieve the incredibly skin benefits to having that combination. Even better, Sweet Cecily’s soothing cream feels incredible on the skin too. This product has now become a super stable to my life.
About Sweet Cecily’s Soothing Skin Cream
Sweet Cecily’s Soothing Skin Cream was formulated, developed, and tested by the now Managing Director, Cecily Fearnley. Cecily had suffered from eczema herself all the way from her late teens right into her early 20s. Cecily had tried just about everything to try and sooth her problem skin – she noticed that there were a few products that were helping slightly but just weren’t clearing the problem entirely. She decided to cherry pick the beneficial ingredients that alleviated her dry/itchy skin from those products and formulate a unique product of her own which contained all of those wonderfully soothing elements. Her goal was to make a natural cream that would become a go to product for anyone else suffering from a breakout of eczema, psoriasis, or any other problem skin condition for that matter.
If you read my recent review of the Eco Egg Laundry, you would know that I have sensitive skin and suffered from eczema and psoriasis on and off since a very young age. I don’t get the massive flare ups like I did as a child ever since I changed to the Paleo lifestyle, however I always know when I’ve used a skin product that contains harsh chemicals. And it is safe to say that they are quickly thrown into the bin.
So, last summer I attended the Free From Allergy Show in London – it was fantastic and highly recommend if you want a day of stuffing yourself with small producers products! However, this year it wasn’t the food that blew me away, it was Sweet Cecily’s all natural range of beauty skin products. Before discovering Cecily’s vintage range I swore that I couldn’t get rid of some stubborn dry skin. Like all of us, I just made excuses for it. Since the day that I received her products I have sworn by them!
The cream itself is matte grey and very subdued looking. I love this. It screams all natural. I found it reassuring that there were only natural ingredients inside that were sure to be kind to my skin. There is a slightly grainy (yet smooth) texture which blends into the skin softly. You don’t find any of that horrible oily-ness that are sometimes associated which “regular”, “shop-bought” hand creams. My favourite place to apply Sweet Cecily’s Soothing Cream is on my hands after training and as a base cream before applying my foundation. I couldn’t believe the effect her cream had on my face after applying make up. I love to contour, and the results were incredible – so much so that I have to use her cream every time.
Sweet Cecily’s recently published a blog about the benefits to each ingredient. Here is a little summary:
- Cocoa butter contains antioxidants as well as key fatty acids which help to hydrate, soothe and heal sensitive skin.
- Almond oil contains several important ingredients including proteins, zinc, vitamin A, monounsaturated fatty acids, vitamin E and it is naturally hypoallergenic!
- Propolis is a resinous substance that is collected from trees and shrubs by the honeybee. Bees use Propolis in a number of ways in the hive, but it’s chief function is to act as a sterilising agent to keep the whole colony free from bacterial infection. (Read more about the benefits of propolis here.)
- Hemp oil contains valuable essential fatty acids such as omega-6 and 3. It has the ability to penetrate skin cells resulting in a great capability to moisturise and also the fatty acids help maintain healthy skin.
- Borage oil contains one of the highest known source of gamma-Linolenic fatty acids. This fatty acid is known for its anti-inflammatory properties and its ability to lock water into the skin, making it a great addition to any topical cream or ointment for the treatment of eczema and other skin conditions.
Packaging and Design
Sweet Cecily’s Soothing Cream comes in a super purple flower, vintage 120ml jar with a reusable silver, twist lid. To me the packaging doesn’t scream natural or attractive but it’s what inside that counts. The packaging has a more nostalgic feel which has a higher value. It reminds me of a beauty product my family would have as their staple cream and would pass around.
Price and Availability
For 120ml, the Sweet Cecily’s Soothing Cream retails at £13.95 which you can buy directly from Sweet Cecily’s itself. As I write this, Sweet Cecily has a sale on at £7.95 a tub – an absolute steal as this soothing cream lasts forever! It’s such an incredible product where a little goes a very long way.
You can also purchase Sweet Cecily’s Soothing Cream and other products from her line from Millbry Hill, however I would always buy from Sweet Cecily’s as you can make your own – and you can even personalise your jar which is perfect for gift options!
