Here I am going to review the artisan raw chocolate brand Raw Halo who recently launched their first collection of 9 bars. I must confess that when I was sent four of the bars to taste test and review, although excited at the prospect of having more chocolate in my life, I was also a little sceptical. Over the last couple of years the raw chocolate industry has literally exploded, everywhere you look there’s a new ‘raw’ brand popping up, screaming “Bite me, Emma”! So, obligingly I have tried a lot of the different brands – all in the name of research of course!
In fact, by weight, their Pure Mylk bar has almost half the total sugars compared to other leading raw chocolate companies offering milk chocolate alternatives.
However, I have to say that Raw Halo is hands down the best raw chocolate I have ever tried (yeh yeh, big statement I know!) for flavour, texture, packaging, and most importantly the chocolate ‘snap’. So let’s get down to the facts. Raw Halo takes the refined sugar-free movement to the next level for raw chocolate. Sweetening their bars naturally with only organic coconut sugar and lucuma powder, they stand out for using significantly less than other brands.
Their Pure Mylk chocolate adds cashew butter, lucuma powder, and pure vanilla to the mix for a creamier tasting bar with subtle caramel notes running throughout. In fact, by weight, their Pure Mylk bar has almost half the total sugars compared to other leading raw chocolate companies offering milk chocolate alternatives. Raw Halo’s Pure Dark 76% chocolate is made from the finest organic Peruvian raw cacao and organic coconut sugar, and is bursting with rich and vibrant flavours.
Their range of 9 bars offers something for everyone whether you prefer your chocolate pure, crunchy, fruity, or flavoured. The collection includes:
Pure Dark, Pure Mylk, Dark + Nibs, Mylk + Crispies, Dark + Sour Cherry and Almond, Mylk + Goji Berry and Vanilla, Dark + Sweet Orange, Mylk + Salted Caramel, and Mylk + Pink Himalayan Salt.
What sizes do they come in?
32g bars, with 4 oblong shaped chocolate segments. I like to have mine to myself, but I suppose you could share!
Where can you buy them?
At the moment you can buy Raw Halo bars directly from their very beautiful, user friendly website. However, I don’t think it’ll be long before the beautiful bars are spreading their pastel rainbow packaged love down the health food aisles.
How much are they?
Each bar retails on the Raw Halo website for £3.50. Yes, this might be expensive compared to your average bar of Galaxy, but lets not forget that it’s handmade, hand wrapped, organic, free from refined sugars, dairy (8/9 of the bars), gluten, artificial sweeteners, wheat, eggs, and lactose. Phew. But before you run for the aisles of non-raw chocolate, how about a sweet little 15% off? Enter PRIMALEYE at the checkout.
What is the packaging like?
The packaging is bright, modern and vibrant with a colourful outer cover and then a luxurious gold foil wrapper around the chocolate, both of which are recyclable. This brand oozes organic decadence. The paper wrapping reminds me of expensive writing paper, thick, sturdy, and reliable. The logo is subtle, beautiful but memorable, just like the chocolate itself.
I tried four of the bars, spanning both the Mylk and Dark range: Dark + Nibs, Dark + Sweet Orange, Mylk + Crispies and Pure Mylk.
Dark + Nibs
A smooth indulgence with a velvety texture and an extra endorphin lovin’ crunch hit from the cacao nibs. This bar was my absolute favourite, from the very first bite I was hooked. I have honestly never tried a better ‘raw chocolate’! I was so disappointed when I realised I had literally inhaled my last bite that I logged straight on-line and purchased not just one but fifteen more!
Dark + Sweet Orange
I was so sure that this bar was going to be my number one as chocolate orange has always been my favourite combination. However, although smooth and dark, that’s pretty much it for this bar. I couldn’t taste the orange at all. For me if a bar states ‘orange’ then I expect to really taste it, so for me this was too mild.
Mylk + Crispies
Smooth, creamy, and oh so delicious, this bar is my second favourite of the four. The crispies are made from dehydrated sprouted buckwheat and give a delicious added crunch. Sweetened with unrefined coconut sugar and lucuma powder, and combined with cashew nut butter to give a deliciously creamy flavour. Chocolate crispy cake lovers will love this as a “healthy” alternative. Who need’s snap, crackle, and pop when you have Raw Halo?
Pretty much what it says on the tin, this is a smooth, creamy bar made by combining the finest organic Peruvian cacao with cashew nut butter and unrefined coconut sugar. A dash of lucuma powder has also been added to it to give a subtle caramel flavour and, more importantly, superfood status. The perfect dairy-free, delicious, and healthy milk chocolate alternative.
If this review has made you weak at the knees then head on over to the Raw Halo website where you can peruse their range of raw chocolate bars and superfood packs. In the meantime if you’d like to see what Raw Halo are up to, why not follow them on:
When I was younger I collected stickers, I had books of them separated in to sections: shiny, furry, oily, jelly... Twenty years later I am collecting bars of chocolate. Not just any normal chocolate though this is Raw Halo chocolate, 100% natural, utterly delicious, unprocessed, and free from refined sugar, artificial sweeteners, gluten, wheat, eggs, and lactose - with eight of the nine bars also being dairy-free and Vegan too.
