A relative new kid on the block in the supplement business, Motion Nutrition is Europe’s first producer of organic superfood supplements. They are where health food and sports supplements meet, and have been created for athletes that want to improve their performance, but more importantly, improve their health. All Motion Nutrition products are made from the highest quality organic ingredients including; raw cacao, rice and pea proteins (in their Vegan Post-Workout Recovery Powder), red banana powder, wheatgrass, matcha powder, coconut water, and kelp extract to name a few. All ingredients are sourced worldwide, and all have a purpose.
Motion Nutrition is a Paleo-friendly, organic, real food product that not only helps improve an athlete’s performance, but also their overall health and well-being.
The team Motion Nutrition headquarters in Greenwich are passionate about creating a product that is free from the usual additives, artificial sweeteners and fillers hidden in supplements; they’re all about quality over quantity. It seems they’re very proud to have a created a natural, organic product that not only delivers in sports nutrition, but also overall health and well-being.
The company was created by athletes for athletes and is the brain child of pals Joe, a 2014 Commonwealth Games swimmer for Scotland, and Charlie who previously set up a sports management agency. Although they come from different backgrounds, both men have a passion for health, well-being, and nutrition. They’re also training partners!
Eating high quality, organic food that both nourishes and energises seems to be a top priority to the team, and it is apparent in their products.
With the many types of protein powder options out there, why does Motion Nutrition still use whey? First and foremost, whey has a great amino acid makeup which is key to help repair muscles post-workout; whey is also easy for the body to absorb. Besides these obvious points, Motion Nutrition chose whey protein for its provenance: their whey comes from cows that have been grass fed and organically farmed. As Paleo people, we already know that grass-fed beef has a far greater nutritional profile than grain-fed; it’s only natural that the quality of milk these cows produce is far superior nutritionally, and therefore yields a better quality whey protein powder. The icing on the cake is that due to the organic certificate, the cow’s milk is free from all the negatives we associate with conventional farming methods: genetically modified feed, antibiotics, and growth hormones. Combine this with all the natural, high quality superfoods Motion Nutrition uses to make its products (in this case raw cacao), and you have a pretty special, top-of-the-line protein powder.
Imagine if Lindt dark chocolate made whey protein powder, because in my opinion that’s what Motion’s Organic Raw Cacao Whey Protein Powder compares to. It’s rich and subtly sweet, and the taste isn’t masked by artificial sweeteners and additives. When I used the powder on its own I mixed a 30g scoop with 200ml of water, as per the package instructions. The resulting drink didn’t have the usual thick body other protein powder drinks do, and it went down very easily.
I used the protein powder as a drink on its own or I mixed it into my daily smoothie bowl. The flavours of the cacao subtly came through in my daily breaking of the fast, and in no way overpowered the flavours of the other ingredients. I also made a few post-long-run recovery shakes with the powder – containing a scoop of powder, a handful of raspberries, a banana, water, and a tablespoon of almond butter – and that too was delicious, again hit the spot, and the powder wasn’t the dominant flavour in my drink.
I enjoyed my protein powder the way Motion Nutrition intended: in a Motion Shaker cup, made by Trimr. While I don’t regularly use such cups anymore, I did in my Olympic lifting days, and I have to say, this is one of the best shaker cups I’ve ever used! Not only is it pretty, but so incredibly practical: the cup comes with a straw to which the shaker spring and lid is attached, allowing for a very quick, clean and easy post-workout drink to be made and enjoyed. The cup is made with BPA-free plastic, and all parts detach easily and are dishwasher safe. Pretty handy if you ask me.
The final Motion Nutrition product I tried was their Hormone Balance supplement, a 30-day supply of capsules designed to support normal hormone function, contribute to energy levels, and promote overall well-being for both men and women. The capsules consist of two different bioavailable forms of magnesium, as well as zinc and vitamin B6. It seems all three micronutrients have been combined for optimal muscle and metabolic functioning:
- Magnesium helps regular muscle function, and reduces muscle fatigue and tiredness.
- Zinc helps maintain regular levels of testosterone.
- Vitamin B6 helps with regular hormonal activity.
I took two capsules every night before bed (as per instructions on the bottle), and experienced two noticeable differences while taking this supplement. The first was with my sleep; while I don’t have trouble falling asleep at night, I usually wake up before my alarm in the morning. And the more stressed I am, the earlier this is. Not only did the Hormone Balance supplement help me fall asleep the moment I put down my book and turned off the light, but it allowed me to stay asleep until my alarm went off.
The other noticeable difference was in my race recovery. While taking this supplement, I ran half an ultra-marathon in a relay team effort; my race leg was 16.5 miles. Usually, in the week following a race, my legs feel heavy during my first post-race run, which is usually two days later. Not only did my legs feel great in my first run post-race, but I ran to a new 5km personal best! Of all the Motion Nutrition products I tried, this is the one I will continue to use.
This product is suitable for vegetarians, and free from gelatine, additives, binders, preservatives and bulking agents.
