With the ‘clean eating’ revolution sweeping the nation, there are lots of TERRIBLE so called ‘health bars’ hitting the supermarket shelves at a rate of a knots. I find it shocking as it’s completely misleading people and making them believe that what they are putting into their bodies is actually good for them. However, a lot of these ‘health bars’ are actually more harmful than they are good. Many of them have dried fruit piled upon more dried fruit, combined with oats, fruit juice, and some even then add sugar. For your teeth and your health it’s safer to steer clear.

What are the Fossil Fuel Bar flavours?
The Fossil Fuel Bars come in two flavours:
Coconut and Cashew Bar (50g)
Ingredients: Dates (53%), Cashew Nuts (25%), Dried Coconut (19%),Coconut Oil (3%)
This was Fossil Fuel’s very first energy bar. This super-tasty Coconut & Cashew bar packs a healthy punch. Fuel your next WOD, ride, or nude base-jump with one of these babies.
Macadamia & Cacao bar (50g)
Ingredients: Dates (60%), Cashew Nuts (20%), Macadamia Nuts (11.6%), Raw Cacao (5% ) and a little bit of coconut oil.
It’s packed with healthy fats and made with the finest Ecuadorian cacao beans.
Where it all began:
The idea for Fossil Fuel came about sometime in 2012 not long after Dave and Gareth both started eating Paleo. They both saw and felt a need for clean, nutritious, energy-rich snacks that they could carry around with them while out and about, at work, or on long MTB rides. Something tasty, filling, and portable that the ‘Paleo Police’ would approve of too.
Armed with a blender and blind enthusiasm, they each began experimenting. The resulting snack bars were purely for their own consumption.
It soon became clear other people loved them too. Dave’s kids devoured each entire batch within a day, and friends and family made lots of “Mmm mmm…” noises when eating them. They embarked upon testing their creations with anyone that they could find; their friends and the fine upstanding coaches and members of Crossfit Hull were especially helpful, accepting the task of eating delicious free food with tireless energy and dedication.
Encouraged by how well the bars were going down with the crowd, they realised they were onto something. And Fossil Fuel—the brand—was born. After a long and bumpy ride along the road of starting a food business, they proudly launched Fossil Fuel to the masses in March 2015.
There is a lot of sugar, be it natural, in these bars so I do say approach with caution. As a Type 1 diabetic I will only have one or two bites of one before I do a HIIT class to keep my blood sugars from crashing or on the flip side I have also used them as low blood sugar treaters- and they are perfect! However, that does give a good indication as to how sugary they are. The bars are relatively big so you can eat 1/2 and then put aside for another day. The great thing about these bars is that they will last for ages. I like to eat mine straight from the fridge, especially the Coconut & Cashew one.
The packaging is eye catching, vibrant, and it’s easy to tear open too.
Flavour and texture:
I find with some energy bars that they can be very oily due to the use of coconut oil and nut oils, but these bars are great as they aren’t oily at all. They are chewy and flavour packed. In terms of flavour my personal favourite would be the Coconut & Cashew bar as it combines my two favourite things – coconut and cashew nuts. It has a lovely bite to it and is very filling. The Macadamia & Cacao bar tastes a lot sweeter and, in my opinion, needs a little more cacao to make it more chocolatey.
