Buko have teamed up with Cuipo an environmental organisation and lifestyle brand with a mission to help protect the planets rainforests by working with various companies around the world such as Buko. Everytime you buy a jar of Buko Organic Coconut Jam, Buko gives a proportion of the income to Cuipo who then use that income to donate one square metre of the rainforest to a non-profit organisation known as ‘1 Metre at a Time‘. So the more you scoff your face the more square metres of rainforest are saved.
Buko source their coconuts from organic, GMO free farms located within the Philippines and works closely with their farmers to ensure that they always get paid a fair price for their crop, obtaining only the best quality coconuts grown without the use of pesticides, fertilisers or other chemicals.
So now you know you’re getting an ethical and good quality product but what do these coconut jams taste like?
Buko Organic Coconut Jams
Buko Original Organic Coconut Jam
Buko’s Original Organic Coconut Jam contains just two ingredients; organic coconut milk and organic coconut nectar – nice and simple, just how I like it. On first glance when you open the jar you see something that resembles a slightly more orange hued Nutella – it’s smooth and instantly looks spreadable. As you plunge the spoon into the deep caramel abyss for the first time it’s like spooning out a hot fudge sauce that you’d pour over an ice cream sundae. Its taste isn’t something you can put into words, certainly not after one spoonful (more like 4 or 5) but I did detect notes of burnt toffee, caramel, coconut, and a sort of citrus like zingy after taste. The initial flavour however is very akin to that of a mildly burnt toffee sauce. It’s sweet, very sweet, and rather deceptively sickly which leads to extreme cases of over indulgence.
I enjoyed eating this flavour straight from the jar but also mixed into a little coconut yogurt along with some almond butter – this experience most definitely can’t be put into words, you’ll just have to take my word for it when I say it was A-mazing!
Buko Chocolate Organic Coconut Jam
The Buko Chocolate Organic Coconut Jam is made with the same base of organic coconut milk and organic coconut nectar but with the addition of one of my most favourite ingredients – organic cacao. The texture is the same as the Original flavour but its hue is slightly darker. There’s a hint of cacao – that’s the first flavour to come through but burnt toffee subdues this beautiful chocolate taste and in a fleeting moment it’s all over and the citrus tangy aftertaste is back. Now don’t get me wrong it’s not that I didn’t enjoy this flavour but more that I wanted to hold on to that cacao for a little longer – it’s far too subtle and I was left wanting more of a chocolate hit (although this could be because I’m a huge chocoholic).
This one seemed to be a big hit with my kids – they loved slathering this all over gluten-free toast and it would be great in a good old-fashioned banana split.
Buko Sea Salt Organic Coconut Jam
Buko’s Organic Coconut Jam with sea salt again works with a base of organic coconut milk and organic coconut nectar but with the addition of Philippine sea salt. It has a burnt toffee like flavour, more so than caramel, and the salt really emphasises those toffee-caramel notes. Adding in a little coconut milk and vanilla extract to this would make a great Paleo alternative to dulce de leche. I was hoping this to taste more like salted caramel than salted burnt toffee but it is definitely perfect when eaten on its own or used as a topping. It’s also a great store cupboard staple to trickle through parfaits or raw cheesecakes when you can’t be bothered making your own sauce.
All 3 coconut jams are available to buy direct via Buko’s Amazon shop and in most online stores, retailing between £5.50 and £6.39.
The Buko Coconut Jam range was probably one of the most enjoyable go-to Paleo treats that I have had the pleasure of trying so far. Its incredibly soft, velvety smooth texture is heavenly and if you place it into the fridge it turns from a spreadable treat into a delightful fudge. It’s perfect spread on gluten-free or Paleo toast and rice cakes, but is also great to top or fill cakes with, whip into coconut cream, add to your morning porridge or coconut yogurt. You could quite easily make chocolate cups and fill them with Buko’s Coconut Jam or add to nicecreams and raw cheesecakes – the possibilities are quite literally endless.
The only downside to eating an ample amount of this delicious spread is that while coconut nectar has an average GI of 35, which is pretty low, I still found it to spike my blood sugar like crazy. Another downside is that the coconut oil can separate out in hot weather and you’re left with a white layer, however this can be easily rectified by stirring up the jam like you would with a separated nut butter. The price can be rather steep depending upon where you buy Buko’s Coconut Jam range from – in fact their own Amazon shop seems to be selling them at the most dearest. This doesn’t bother me so much as it is a luxury item and I know my money is going to a good, honest company as well as a portion of what I’m paying is going toward saving the rainforest.
The packaging however is sturdy and recyclable, and the labeling is bright, modern, and downright fantastic. Buko’s operation with Cuipo is fantastic and commendable in this day and age and it’s nice to see that some companies still have such high values as well as selling high quality produce. The full Buko Coconut Jam range was a pleasure to indulge in and it’s nice to know that there are healthier sweet spread alternatives out there compared to mainstream supermarkets. Buko’s Coconut Jam is perfect for kids and adults alike and there’s sure to be a flavour to suit everyone.
